What is Drug Addiction and Alcohol Addiction
Drug addiction is the chronic and intense compulsion to satisfy cravings in the brain through the repeated use of a substance no matter the cost or consequences. It is a condition that involves compulsive drug use, craving and seeking, withdrawal, and dysfunctional behavior. It has the ability to steal a persons’ joy, destroy their purpose and testimony, and even kill them given a long enough time table. And unlike many other diseases, it can never be fully cured… but it can be arrested. If you have not seen the video, please check it out here: Christian Drug and Alcohol Rehab.
But Isn’t Taking Drugs a Choice…
Addiction is quite complex. Many people cannot understand how and why others get addicted, and may have some misconceptions about this disease. When a person first decides to take drugs, it is at that point undeniably a choice. Some try it out of curiosity while others are pushed into it by social and economic circumstances, but modern brain scanning technology (PET and SPECT scans) has revealed how the choice to take drugs soon dissipates and becomes a physical and psychological dependence in which the user incrementally loses his ability to “choose” to stop using due to a type of brain damage that affects decision making.
What Drug Addiction and Alchol Abuse does to the Brain
A detailed report of the affects of prolonged drug and alcohol abuse on the brain is outside of the scope of this synopsis, but in short:
* Drugs are chemicals that tap into the brains communication system and disrupt the way that nerves receive, send, and process information.
* Drugs flood the system with dopamine which produces euphoria. The damage and conditioning from dopamine flooding however causes the brain to reduce the amount of dopamine it produces which leads to depression and cravings.
* Drugs are neurotoxins that destroy the brains serotonin distribution system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which regulates mood, appetite, and sensory perception.
* Drugs decimate the prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain responsible for whether we act on impulses or not. This area of the brain essentially controls inhibitions among other decision making functions.
Some of this damage is sadly permanent. But the human body and brain are unbelievably resilient and capable of repairing much of this damage if given the time and healthy living to do so.
What Chemical Dependence Dug Abuse and Alcohol Abuse Does to the Spirit
Drug dependence and alcohol abuse facilitates the emotional and spiritual death of a person by stealing any possibility to feel joy and purpose outside of drug use. And even during use, that type of joy is short lived and hollow. It is a lonely, sick, and dark place that has no regard for how good or bad a person is, how they were raised, or how strong or weak their will-power is. It attacks any person from any social class and is extremely related to the occult and to the demonic. Its tentacles extend from the addict to everyone who loves or cares about the addict. Most important though is that addiction creates a riff between God and the addict and opens people to evil influences that lead to crime, high risk sex and high risk behaviors, and an unyielding sense of hopelessness and despair. God doesn’t want anyone to live and suffer like this.
There's Hope, Healing, & Recovery from Chemical Dependance through the Highest Power
Imagine how incredible it would feel to be free of the pain and torment caused by drug addiction and alcohol addiction. Instead of tears there would be smiles and laughter. Instead of court dates there would be important family celebrations and promotions at work. Instead of being looked down at, you would inspire others by your incredible story of redemption. Being free of addiction of course doesn’t guarantee any of this, but it does create the very real possibility of these types of things happening.
Recovery is not possible outside of God. Every secular 12 step program believes this even if they call him a different name. Many addicts have been stuck in the cycle of addiction and relapse because they continue to rely on their own strength. Recovery is about relying on strength that one does not inherently posses, but does posses as part of a collective of likeminded individuals who are being led by God. God has a unique ability to restore people and use them to glorify Him, and He is the ultimate provider of hope and healing.
What You Should do Now
In Revelations 12:11 it says, “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.” Our Masters Camp understands that just quitting drugs is only the first step. We must be recreated from the floor up, first by creating a real and lasting relationship with God and second, by healing the hurts, hang-ups, and habits that lead people back to relapse. This process requires time, a safe place, and a supportive and caring community. Many people don’t have this in their immediate vicinity, so Our Master's Camp provides this at possibly the most affordable and value packed cost in the entire United States.
The first step is to pray about what you or your loved one should do. God is listening and waiting patiently to give you guidance. Next, we would love to talk to you or your loved one who’s struggling with addiction about becoming a resident on our beautiful countryside site in the mountains of Pikesville Tennessee.
